Finding a School in Minnesota
Home to the Golden Gophers, the University of Minnesota is probably the best known college or university in the great state of Minnesota. But, what other schools are there in this great state? More than you might think and with more diversity and specialized major programs that you may think. Let's take a look and see a sample of what Minnesota schools can offer a prospective college student.
Minnesota Community College
Minnesota has a number of community colleges for students who are looking to see if college is the right choice for them after high school or maybe for those who decided not to attend college earlier in their lives. The Community College system is designed to give students their associate's degree in any number of different areas and to help prepare students for a four year college or university. Many people think that the courses offered at community colleges are not "real" and that could not be further from the truth. The reality is that at four year colleges and universities, undergrad students are taking virtually identical "pre-requisite" courses and elective units to help give them a broad base of knowledge and to help prepare them for the specialized course of their major programs. Many times these courses are the same at community colleges and 4 year schools.
Minnesota Colleges and Universities
From Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota to Century College, to Hamline University, Minnesota has a wide variety of 4 year colleges, techical colleges and universities to choose from. One thing that sets Minnesota apart from most other states is the large number of satellite campuses the University of Minnesota has. While this may not be appealing to everyone, this allows many families and students to attent a large university with the faculty and resources only a large university, like the University of Minnesota, would have access to. Of course, U of Minn is not the only 4 year school by a long shot. Hamline University is one of the top ranked Master's programs in the mid-west. Founded in 1854, Hamline is a private university with many students choosing a major in psychology, business administration and English literature. So, you can see that the student base is a diverse one. Macalester College, located in St. Paul, is another top choice finding themselves in the top 25 liberal arts programs in the country in 2006. This has meant that applications to Macalester have skyrocketed to nearly 5,000 a year and the college usually accepts less than a third of those. But, this just goes to show you that you can't always judge a book by its cover. Minnesota is home to many little institutional gems that most parents, college counselors and students don't know about.

'U' Students Start Business, Sell iPod Covers
(WCCO) Minneapolis For the first time, instructors at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management are giving students the business, literally. A group of college students beat out six teams to earn the chance to develop and operate their own business, which they call "uSuits". "We were just talking about how many students actually have iPods and it’s a growing number and we're seeing it more and more and people want to protect their iPod," said one of the students, explaining how uSuits was launched. The uSuit is a silicon cover which slips over the iPod to help protect it. "It just made sense to put the university logos on the cases because that had never been done before," explained uSuits CEO and student Reed Robinson. This is the first time students at the 'U' have started their own business as a part of a class. "The goal was to give students a practical experience in what it is to actually run a business," said professor Frank Beil. "They had to go through designing the product, making the product, selling the product." In a week and a half, 30 uSuits have been sold at the University of Minnesota Bookstore, - more available
